Blacketts Win Window Competition
The Newgate Street furniture shop, Blacketts have won this year’s festive window dressing competition. Judging took place on Tuesday afternoon and Blacketts won by a narrow margin, closely followed by R Legge Florists (Newgate Street), Shewan Opticians, and Trimmers Hairdressers, who will all receive certificates of commendation.
The Blacketts display depicted the past present and future of Christmas and shows the transition of Father Christmas throughout the years. It was created by the children of Etherley Lane School and has now been returned to the school for nativity plays.
Nick Blackett, the owner of the business said: “The children had come third and second in previous years and are delighted to have won with there efforts this year. “Third time lucky! Special thanks go to schoolteachers Mrs Martin, Mrs Hemingway and Mrs Reid, for all their hard work.”
The window dressing competition is organised by Steve McCormick, Bishop Auckland Town Centre Manager on behalf of Bishop Auckland Town Centre Forum and Wear Valley District Council.
It is now in its sixth year and Blacketts now join last year’s winners Chic-cargo, along with previous winners R Legge, Flowerworld, Reed Rains and Asda on the specially-commissioned winner’s shield which will be kept on display in the shop for the coming year.
The judges were councillor Barbara Laurie, Chair of Bishop Auckland Town Centre Forum, Councillor Alan Anderson, Mayor of Bishop Auckland, and Steve McCormick, Bishop Auckland Town Centre Manager.Steve said: “This year’s competition is to a very high standard, and really contributes to the festive attractiveness of the street. “The seventeen entries consist of both independent shops and chain stores. “There is still, however, opportunities for other shops to become involved and I would encourage businesses to do so in future years.”
Barbara Laurie, Chair of the Bishop Auckland Town Centre Forum added: “Although it was a close run thing, Blacketts are a worthy winner, with the contribution from the schoolchildren greatly appreciated and shows partnership working in the community. “The Forum is grateful to all the entrants who help to create a really lovely atmosphere at Christmas.”
The display is now on view in the entrance of Etherley Lane School.
