‘I cannot count how many time I have heard that said since I took up post’, said Derek Toon, the Town Centre Manager.  As someone whose clothes often came via a Doggarts’ club, I can well understand the sentiment.’

Derek accepts that Doggarts can never be recreated in its full glory, but hopes to commemorate the shop in some way.

The Mike Amos column in this paper has been running a series of articles on the Doggarts’ phenomenon resulting in a number of ex Doggarts’ employees making contact with the paper.  Most excitingly, one of the remaining Doggarts’ family, Sandy Doggart, has contacted Derek to offer his support for the project.

Plans are now being developed for an exhibition in the Discovery Centre sometime next year on Doggarts and, perhaps, some of the other famous Bishop Auckland stores – do you remember Sterlings Best Boots, Murdoch’s Underground Millinery Saloon, Walter Wilsons, Gills or Hardy & Co.

Eventually, Derek hopes to have a permanent Doggarts’ window somewhere in the town.
